Before Matt asked me to come on board the Found Media ship, he had recruited me with a different project in mind. This project, in short (we will undoubtedly talk more about it in the future), was a way for both of us to meld our passions of doing social justice and making a positive impact in our world together – we decided on calling it Shift the Norm.
While Shift the Norm remains a long-term vision for Matt and I, we realized that if we wanted to make an impact on the world with our work, we had to start with Found. As a start-up, we knew that we couldn’t write million dollar checks, but we could do the best with what we had and began our small and humble giving program. Our giving program gives a percentage of our quarterly profits to a different organization that, as a company, we feel strongly about and feel that it reflects our values as individuals. We switch the emphasis each quarter from local to state-wide to nation-wide to world-wide (a reflection of the places that we have been lucky enough to work and serve in).
The giving program isn’t a way to brag however. As a start-up, the decision to donate that hard-earned money comes at a steeper price than what it costs a company like HP or Apple to donate. Yet the decision to give feels right because we are aware of how blessed we are to be able to embark on our dreams and goals when many others don’t have that chance. Where we choose to give is a reflection of our values as a team and of Found. We give because we have been given.
Our first donation went to Make-A-Wish Central Texas, a reflection of our commitment to their work with children in the area. Stay tuned to our social media accounts to see what organization we give to next.
“…when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity…you do not slam it shut behind you…. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed….Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” – Michelle Obama
